News No. 153/2011, November 11, 2011

A MEMBER of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead by an armed gang loyal to Santu Larma, chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council.

The deceased UPDF man has been identified as Amulyo Dhan Chakma alias Regan (43) son of Gyana Mohan Chakma of village Larma Para, Naniachar, Rangamati district.

Another villager has also been wounded in the attack. His name is Samiron Chakma (35) from Ghilatoli in Jurachari Upazila.

The gun attack took place at 11am yesterday (10 Nov) near Shilchari bazaar in Ghilatoli area.

‘Amulyo Dhan and Samiron were on their way to Shilchari bazaar when the Santu men opened fire on them, leaving Amulyo Dhan dead on the spot and Samiron wounded’, Udoy Chakma of UPDF said.

He has condemned the attack as “cowardly” and urged Santu Larma to shun politics of violence and come forward to find a peaceful negotiated settlement with UPDF.

‘You are doing immense harm to the Jumma people by indulging in senseless killings. If you have any grievance against UPDF, come and talk to us.’ he said addressing Santu Larma.
