Rape and murder of Sujata Chakma: culprit arrested

News No. 30/2012, May 11, 2012

THE murderer and rapist of Sujata Chakma was arrested by police in Longudu in Rangamati district, sources said.

The police arrested Ibrahim on Thursday morning from Yarengchara under Attarokchara Union.

‘He has confessed to raping and killing the 11-year old girl’, Prothom Alo, a Bengali daily, quoted Rezaul Karim, Officer-in-charge of Longudu Thana (police station), as saying.

Ibrahim was trying to escape from Yarengchara after committing the crime when the local villagers caught him. Later, they handed him over to the police.

Sujata’s elder brother Biton Chakma, who is a member of Attarokchara Union (Ward No. 8), filed a criminal case against him.

He will be produced before the court on next Sunday, police said.

Ibrahim, who originally hails from Bulondi village in Jessore Sadar Upazila, is also accused of raping another Jumma teen age girl on 15 June last year.

He was released from jail about eight months after his arrest after he was granted bail by a higher court.

After release, he came back to Longudu, and on Wednesday (9 May) raped and killed Sujata, a fourth grade student of Ultochari Government Primary School.

Ibrahim is a Muslim convert from Hinduism.

The Hill Women’s Federation, Hill Students’ Council and Democratic Youth Forum yesterday staged demonstrations in Panchari, Khagrachari Sadar, Dighinala, Baghaichari, Mahalchari in Khagrachari district and in Naniachar of Rangamati district.
