THREE members of the Hill Students’ Council, a front organization of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF), were tortured by Santu Larma loyalists in Bandarban, sources said.

According to sources, Umongla Marma, 15, a class ten student of Bandarban Cantonment Public School and College, was beaten up by JSS (Santu group) thugs yesterday morning when he went home in Rajvila from Balaghata in Bandarban town.

Umongla is a staunch supporter of the PCP and attended its rallies and public meetings on many occasions.

Two other PCP activists – Paimong Marma, 19, and Uting Marma, 20, -- were tortured when they went to see Umongla Marma at Bandarban Sadar Hospital where he got admitted after the incident.

Paimong told chtnews.com from a hospital bed by mobile phone: ‘It was about 7:30pm. We were about to enter the ward on the first floor of Bandarban hospital where Umongla was being treated when 20 – 25 JSS men caught us. Obviously, they were waiting for us there.’

He continued: ‘The JSS thugs dragged us to the hospital gate, huddled us into a vehicle to the full public view and then took us to Ujanipara.’

According to him, the JSS men used a Mohendra (auto-rickshaw), two CNG-run auto-rickshaws and two motorbikes during the attack.

He said the miscreants had separated them from each other and then beat them with sticks and iron rods as well as with fists and kicks.

‘I was left unconscious, and when I regained my senses I hired an auto-rickshaw and got back to Balaghata.’ Paimong said, adding ‘Uting was released earlier’.

He said he recognized some of the attackers. They include Ubaching Marma, 28, son of Pulumong Marma (Ujanipara, Ward No. 5), Ukhing Hla Marma, Malu Aung Marma, Mongstu Marma, Ushainu Marma, Ukyo Wai Chak, Dipayan Chakma, Bikash Chakma, Pintu Chakma and Ushala Marma.

All of them are Santu Larma loyalists and took part in the beating.

Paimong sustained serious injuries in one of his eyes while Uting would need stitches for a cut in his head, a nurse said.

Both of them have been referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
