THE
ARMY has arrested three activists of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front
(UPDF) in a pre-dawn raid in the village
of Gorgojyachari
under Khagrachari Union No. 1, villagers and UPDF leaders have said.
The
soldiers from Bizitola army camp raided the village at 5am today and arrested
Protul Moy Chakma alias Rocket, 30, son of Bosonta Chakma, Rapru Marma, 20, son
of Reda Marma of village Rubber Bagan, Kamalchari and Rupendu Chakma, 18, son
of Ashok Mitra Chakma of village Hazachara, Merung, Dighinala.
Rupendu
Chakma is general secretary of PCP Merung UP branch and a tenth grade student
of Merung High School.
The
army men stayed in the village till 8am
and searched a number of houses.
A
villager told chtnews.com,
‘The soldiers surrounded the village at about 5am.
At the time Rocket went out for jogging. The army arrested him. Later, they
came to my house and arrested the other two UPDF members. The army beat them
seriously.’
He
also said that the soldiers had searched his house for two-and-a half hours but
found nothing incriminating.
‘Besides
my house, a number of other houses in the village were also searched and the
army turned everything upside down.’ he added.
After
that, the army men left the village taking UPDF members along with them.
