THE
ARMY has arrested two United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) activists in
Ramgarh, Khagrachari district, UPDF and other sources have said.
They
have been arrested for participating in protest demonstrations against recent
land grabbing in Pilabhanga village in Ramgarh, UPDF has alleged.
According
to sources, a group of army personnel led by Mejor Safkat from Guimara sub-zone
last night raided the village of Choto Kalapani in Hafchari Union under Ramgarh
Upazila and arrested them from the house of Nibaron Chakma alias Bablu.
The
arrested UPDF members have been identified as Jawharlal Chakma alias Mithun,
40, son of Biraj Mohan Chakma of village Munigram and Khitonsha Tripura alias
Monoi, 24, son of Mahakumr Tripura of village Machyochara Para, Matiranga.
They
were sleeping there when the arrest was made.
The
soldiers also searched the house of Shachindra Chakma and picked up Chittra
Joti Chakma, a member of the Hill Students Council, from there.
However,
he was released afterwards while on the way to the camp.
The
army men asked him not to stage demonstrations in protest against the arrest
and threatened him that ‘if this order is not complied with, we will arrest you
too.’
Organizer
of UPDF Ramgarh unit, Apu Tripra, in a statement condemned the arrest and
demanded that the government release them unconditionally.
He
said they have been arrested for participating in protest demonstrations
against recent land grabbing in Pilabhanga village in Ramgrah.
‘No
amount of repression will subdue our just struggle’ he added.
