THE HIRED goons of Santu Larma shot and injured a member of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) in Baghaichari, Rangamati, a day after a DYF activist was wounded in a similar Taliban-style attack in Khagrachari, sources said.

A man, identifying himself Sagor Chakma son of Kamini Ranjan Chakma, came to a village shop at Jibongachara in Babupara in the afternoon today and asked for some money from Doya Kumar Chakma alias Smriti, 41, a UPDF activist.

Sagor claimed himself to be a UPDF supporter and said he had not had lunch for the day.

Smriti took him for his word, and gave Taka 100 to buy lunch.

But when the man did not leave the place even after getting the help he asked for, the UPDF men began to suspect him.

At one stage, as they proceeded to search him, the man, sensing imminent danger, shot at Smriti Chakma and drove away mounting on a motorbike.

Smriti Chakma sustained injuries on both thighs.

Sama Shanti Chakma, organizer of UPDF Baghaichari unit, has condemned the attack as ‘an act of terrorism by Santu Larma’ and urged the people to resist this brutal fascist and government collaborator.

He said, ‘Santu Larma is apparently trying to imitate the Talibans in his attacks against UPDF.’

‘But Chittagong Hill Tracts is neither Afganistan, nor Middle East, and such tactics will eventually fail.’ he added.
