According to eyewitness accounts, a group of Santu Larma loyalists, numbering between 10 and 12, led by Bakul, Siku and Sumon picked up Rupantor Chakma, Moni Chakma, Niku Chakma and Riten Chakma from M Ali Mansion at Barrister College area in Bandar Thana.

They took them to their den in Ambia Bhaban and beat them up. The Santu men also seized their mobile handsets and asked them to pay Taka 10,000 each in 10 days, before setting them free.

Police conducted an investigation of the incident in the morning today and filed a case against those involved in the incident.

The tortured DYF activists work at factories in Chittagong Export Processing Zone, while the Santu loyalists are not engaged in jobs. They are regularly paid by him.

The attack comes three days after a similar attack in Bandar area in which five DYF leaders and activists were beaten and framed with false charges of extortion.

The Santu men had been threatening DYF activists in Bandar since 7 September when they formed Barrister College Area branch of the DYF.

They felt that they were losing ground, and became desperate to retain their hold by resorting to their old tactic – physical violence.
