A JUMMA girl has been
reportedly subjected to attempted rape by a Bengali settler in Panchari under
Khagrachari district.
According to sources, the incident occurred on 13
December, at about 4:30pm,
when Heten Bala Tripura of Basha Karbari Para village
of Moratila under Ultachari Union, Panchari, went to fetch water
from a nearby stream.
One Hassan Ali, 30, son of Mujibur Rahman of Mollapara village
of Ultachari Union grabbed her from behind and attempted to rape her.
However, the 17-year old girl was somehow able to free
herself and ran away from him.
She told her agonizing story to her mother and on 14
December, village elders of both Tripura and Bengali communities met in
arbitration to settle the matter, victim’s father Helendra Tripura said.
The Hill Women’s Federation General Secretary, Rina
Dewan, has condemned the incident.
