A FOUR-YEAR old Marma girl was
raped by a Chakma youth in Naniachar in Rangamati district on 12 December,
Wednesday.
The police arrested Jiko Chakma, 20, in connection with
the incident.
Locals and the victim’s parents said, at about 10pm on the day of incident Ziko Chakma of Bihar Para lured
the girl, his neighbour, to Kinapoti Janabal Buddhist temple and then raped
her.
As the girl screamed and wailed in pain, nearby villagers
and the temple’s guard rushed there and caught Ziko Chakma. He was later handed
over to the police.
The girl was admitted first to Naniachar Upazila Health
complex in critical condition and later shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
On Thursday, the accused was produced before Rangamati
district judge’s court and the court refused to grant him bail.
The Hill Women’s Federation has condemned the rape of the
Marma girl as “most reprehensible” and demanded that the perpetrator be awarded
exemplary punishment for the heinous crime.
It urged Jumma political and traditional leaders to take
effective measures to deal with this new malaise in Jumma society.
