THE two Democratic Youth Forum and Hill Students Council leaders arrested by Border Guards Bangladesh today at 1pm from Taipa area under Gomati Union have been handed over to the police in Matiranga.

The BGB placed an old, rickety gun (LG) in the hands of Sushanta Tripura, 25, and Amal Tripura, 18, before handing them over to the police in the evening today.

A false case under Arms Act has been instituted against them.

Both Sushanta and Amal passed Secondary School Certificate exam this year and were making preparations to enroll in Matiranga College.

Amal attended SSC exam from Matiranga Pilot High School, while Suhanta was a student of Open University.

Amal’s father’s name is Rajendra Tripura and Sushanta’s father’s name is Kushum Tripura. They live in the village of Akbari in Matiranga.

They were arrested by Lt. Col. Nuruzzaman, commander of Palashpur Zone, while on their way back home after attending a public meeting in Tabalchari.

Ziko Tripura, a DYF leader, quoted Lt. Col. Nuruzzamn as saying that he had arrested the PCP and DYF leaders because they were holding meetings without taking prior permission from him.

A member of Amtoli Union Council, Jalatkar Tripura said, “Lt. Col. Nuruzzaman called me yesterday to say that he thought the DYF had every right to hold meetings and that he would help them in his capacity as a BGB officer if he was asked for.”

“But to my utter shock the commander has broken his own pledge and arrested the organizers of the meeting. By arresting these two students he has ruined their educational life and their future.” he added.
