Terrorists attack by Santu group: 2 killed, 1 kidnapped

AT LEAST two activists have been killed in a terrorist attack by government-backed Santu group in Pujgang under Panchari Upazila in Khagrachari district.

The gun attack took place at about 7:30am today. UPDF activist Samiron Chakma died on the spot while Puron Kumar Chakma alias German, 45, a member of the JSS M N Larma faction succumbed his injuries at Khagrachari Sadar hospital.

The terrorists kidnapped another UPDF activist, who has been identified as Shyamol Chakma.

Samiron Chakma, son of Shildhon Chakma, hails from Jubonashwa Para village while German Chakma is from Shib Mondir area in Khagrachari. His father’s name is Krishna Ram Chakma.

Shyamol Chakma’s father’s name is Jeetendrio Chakma and is a resident of Bor Kolok village in Pujgang.

According to sources, at about 7:30am, a group of 7 armed men loyal to Santu Larma picked up Samiron Chakma and Shyamol Chakma from Pujgang bazaar area.

The terrorists took them a little distance to Shontila road in Jugeshwar Para and shot Samiron Chakma at point blank range, killing him on the spot.

They left him there, and took Shyamol away.

The Santu loyalists, who lay in wait for their prey, also opened fire on German Chakma, injuring him critically.

He sustained bullet wounds in his head and was pronounced dead when rushed to Khagrachari Sadar hospital.

Samiron Chakma was assistant general secretary of the Hill Students’ Council’s Khagrachari district unit as well as general secretary of its Panchari Upazila unit. Later he joined UPDF and worked as an organiser in Panchari unit until his death.

UPDF in a statement has condemned the killing as ‘heinous and cowardly’ and demanded that the killers be arrested and punished.
