A 16-YEAR-OLD
vocally-challenged Jumma girl was subjected to an attempted rape in Manikchari,
Khagrachari district.
The would-be rapist, a father of three children, Md.
Shaha Alam was found guilty in village arbitration and fined with Taka 10
thousand and awarded several lashes for the crime he committed.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon (10 Feb).
The victim, a member of the Marma community, was
cooking in the courtyard of her home in Chudurkhil village under Batnatali
Union when Shaha Alam (45) suddenly appeared from behind, grabbed and dragged
her into the house and then tried to rape her.
She kept resisting and was rescued when her younger
brothers -- Hlachai Marma and Paichaching Marma -- rushed there after she let
out shrill voices in the course of her resistance.
However, Shaha Alam fled as they reached there.
Batnatali Union Council Chairman Shahidul Islam, who
presided over the arbitration, said the culprit was found guilty and punished.
The arbitration was also attended by other elected
representatives of the area and village elders.
