DB police injure one, arrest 4 in Khagrachari

A JUMMA man has been wounded as the Detective Branch police fired gunshots into a crowd of people resisting arrest of an innocent Jumma in Akbari, Khagrachari Sador Union.

According to sources, a Jumma youth signaled a Khagrachari-bound jeep to take him.

The jeep which was coming from Mahalchari, pulled up, but instead of taking him some DB police, disguised as traders, got down from it and tried to arrest him, believing him to be an extortionist.

But local people came forward to rescue the youth, leading to a heightened tension between them.

At one stage, the DB police, who had until then concealed their indentity, took their guns out and fired into the fleeing Jummas, injuring Bimal Joy Tripura in the leg.
Later on, a group of army personnel rushed to the spot and arrested Bimal Joy and four others.

They include Chomurung Tripura (32) son of Biro Kumar Tripura from Akbari village; Bijoy Chakma (31) son of Poshu Ranjan Chakma, and Dulal Tripura alias Bantarai (37) son of Rai Tripura from Champaghat area and Sunayan Tripura alias Chailapru (40) son of Purno Ray Tripura from Bangalkati village.

The army also briefly detained Nobin Kumar Chakma, a shopkeeper at Champaghat, before setting him free.
