Five Jumma injured in settler attack in Baghaichari

AT least five people including three women have been wounded when a group of Bengali Settlers attacked a passenger launch at Digor Mukh area in Choto Mallya under Amtoli Union in Baghaichari Upazila of Rangamati district, sources say.

The victims include Tonna Chakma, 32, Binoti Chakma, 40, Rishika Chakma,26, Sibli Kumar Chakma, 30 and Jutho Moy Chakma, 31.

The attack took place on Saturday at 9: 30 am at a place called Digor Mukh which lies between Langudu and Baghaichari Upazilas.

One of the victims, Rishika Chakma, said the launch carrying them set off at 7 in the morning from Baghaichari, and it came under attack at 9:30 am at Mallya.

“A group of Bengali Settlers in 12-15 boats stopped the launch and then singled out the Jumma passengers for attack” she said.

When informed, a joint team of army and police personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the victims, who were immediately sent to Longadu zone for medical treatment.

According to Jakir Hossain Fakir, Officer-in-charge of Baghaichari Thana, a group of Bengali settlers led by Md. Babul, a member of Gulchakhali Union Council ( ward no 03) have carried out the attack which left 8-10 people injured.

The reason for the attack could not be immediately known.

None of the attackers have been arrested so far.
