Settler attack International human rights day rally leaves three Jummas injured in Manikchari

AN attack on an international human rights day rally left three Jumma participants injured in Manikchari, Khagrachari district yesterday, according to sources.

A Jumma organzation styled Student and Youth Committee for Protection of Land in Manikchari had planned the rally at Sudurkhil Bazaar in Manikchari on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.

The participants were about to hold the rally at Tetultola after parading Sudurkhil Bazaar in a procession when a group of illegal Bengali settlers attacked them.

The Jummas were demanding an end to human rights violations including illegal land grabbing in their area.

The injured Jummas have been identified as Laxmiram Chakma, 36, son of Merakazi Chakma, Uthoiching Marma, 25, son of Mong Hla Pru Marma and Monabo Chakma, 38, son of Gopal Chakma.

Some of the attackers have been identified as Md. Jahangir, 65, Majid (a member of Ansar Battalion), 45, Fazlul, 60, Noor Alam, 40, Sumon, 32, Noor Hossain and Shafiq.

A contingent of army and police appeared at the scene after the attack, but they took no action against the attackers.
