Two PCP activists arrested from rally in Guimara

TWO activists of the Hill Students’ Council (PCP), a front organization of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF), were arrested as the army and police attacked its rally without provocation in Guimara on Saturday.

Many other PCP activists were also wounded when the police fired rubber bullets on them, said a PCP press release.

According to the press release, activists and supporters of the PCP Guimara branch held a rally at Bailachari Bridge area at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 23 to press home its eight point demand.

‘We came under attack as we started going back home at the end of the rally, which we organized to demand the cancellation of a education ministry directive ordering local administrations to monitor educational institutions in the CHT for anti-state activities.’ a participant told chtnews.com.

At least four PCP activists were wounded during the attack, and the arrested PCP leaders – Sumonto Chakma, educational and cultural secretary of the PCP Khangrachari branch, and Jonimoy Tripura, a PCP member – were among them.

The PCP has condemned the attack and demanded unconditional release of Sumonto Cahkma and Jonimoy Tripura.
