One wounded in settler attack in Laxmichari

News No. 05/2018, Monday, January 8, 2018

A JUMMA villager has been seriously wounded as he resisted an attempt by Bengali settlers to grab his land in Laxmichari today.

According to sources, a group of Bengali settlers led by Mohammad Hakim, Zakir and Mossaraf made an attempt to grab land belonging to Thoaiching Marma, 34, son of Khizuri Marma, in Monghla-para village at 11 a. m. today.

‘When the settlers began clearing jungle in his land, Thoaiching protested. Then the settlers struck him in the head with an axe, wounding him seriously’, Aungyo Pru Marma, Vice Chairman of Laxmichari Upazila, told chtnews.com.

Thoaiching was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition, he added.

The Jumma villagers caught some of the attackers and handed them over to the police, but the police, to their utter surprise, refused to arrest them.

‘It is surprising that the police should let the attackers go scot-free.’ one of the villagers, who participated in the resistance, said.

A tense situation is now prevailing in Laxmichari following the incident.
