News No. 34/2018 : Monday, March 19, 2018

A YOUTH leader was wounded and two leaders of a women organization were kidnapped during an armed attack by army-backed Nobyo Mukhosh Bahini vigilantes in Kudukchari of Rangamati district on Sunday morning.

According to eyewitnesses’ accounts, 7 – 8 vigilantes, armed with sophisticated weapons, carried out the attack at 9:15 a.m. after an army vehicle dropped them near a tea shop in Kudukchari on Khagrachari – Rangamati road.

‘They got down from an army vehicle, went to Abashik (a village), a few hundred yards from the road, and then opened fire on the villagers,’ an eyewitness told chtnews.com.

The gun attack left Dhormasingh Chakma, a leader of the Democratic Youth Forum, severely wounded.

The miscreants also set fire to a house used by students in the village and abducted Monti Chakma, general secretary of the Hill Women’s Federation, and Doyasona Chakma, president of its Rangamati district unit.

Earlier the NMB chief Topon Jyoti Chakma alias Borma had threatened to rape Monti Chakma for criticizing his vigilante activities.

The army provided protection to the vigilantes during the whole operation.

UPDF has condemned the attack as ‘cowardice and obnoxious’ and urged the government to immediately disband the Nobyo Mukhosh Bahini vigilante group.
