There are growing concerns of a large-scale army
operation in the Barmachari area of Lakshmichari upazila, Khagrachari district.
According to reports, on Saturday night (November 8)
and early Sunday morning (November 9), around 30 army vehicles arrived at the Lakshmichari
Zone. Among them were six officers’ vehicles and four ambulances, sources said.
The soldiers who arrived in those vehicles are
currently stationed at the Lakshmichari Zone and are moving around the
surrounding areas.
It has been learnt that the GOC (General Officer
Commanding) of the 24th Infantry Division, Chattogram, is currently present at
the Lakshmichari army zone, though this information could not be independently
verified.
According to a reliable source, the army may launch
an operation tonight (Sunday) by dividing into four groups to conduct raids in
Barmachari, Hudukchari, and several other areas. Reportedly, each group will be
accompanied by one member of the local armed vigilante.
Meanwhile, since November 6, a group of 20–25
soldiers led by Major Saifur Rahman Turjo, commander of the Khiram Camp, has
been staying in tents set up in a mango orchard near the house of Sumoti Kumar
Chakma in Reserve Para village. From there, they have been conducting patrol
operations in the area.
It may be recalled that a few days earlier, an army
team attempted to set up a camp on land belonging to the Barmachari Arjo Kalyan
Bana Vihara and local residents, but abandoned the plan following public
protests.
However, army personnel have since taken positions
at various locations across the area.
