Five UPDF activists’ bail revoked, sent to jail

A SENIOR Judicial Magitrate in Potia, Chittagong, revoked bail for five activists of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF), as they appeared before the court today in a murder case.

The Magistrate, Akter Hossain, ordered Bakul Chakma, Bijoy Chakma, Sumon Chakma, Atish Chakma and Jonathan Chakma to be sent to jail.


The UPDF activists, falsely charged with murdering Shukro Moni Chakma alias Thudo Kaligor, a JSS (Santu faction) member, had been on bail since February this year.

Thudo Kaligor, an expert in repairing guns and pistols, was responsible for procuring arms and ammunitions for Santu group and is widely believed to have been murdered by arms peddlers following a quarrel over an issue relating to payment.

When he was killed by unknown attackers in mysterious circumstances in a jungle in Potia outside of the CHT on 11 October last year, all the arrested but Jonathan Chakma worked at factories in Chittagong EPZ. Jonathan was a student of Syamoli Polytechnic College in Chittagong.

They were arrested on 16 October 2011 and were granted bail by the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s court on 16 February this year.
