Two including Bazar Chowdhury kidnapped in Laxmichari

TWO persons including the Laxmichari bazaar chowdhury (market caretaker) have been kidnapped in a joint attack by army-backed Borkha Party vigilante group and Santu Larma faction of the JSS.

According to sources, last night (30 September), a gang of 10 – 15 armed men belonging to BP and Santu group kidnapped Laxmichari Bazaar Chowdhury Rashik Kumar Chakma, 40 son of Jamani Chakma from his home in Laxmicahri Upazila headquarters and Gulchoga Chakma, 35 son of Mohan Chakma from Bandarkaba village.

Another villager in Bandarkaba, Chikon Peda Chakma, 30, was beaten, sources added.

The reason for the kidnapping is not known. But the Borkha Party and Santu group often kidnap people for ransom.

The latest incident raised to 30 the number people kidnapped by them in Laxmichari.

Borkha Party is a Jumma vigilante group created by the army in mid 2009 to counter the growing influence of the UPDF.

It is responsible for the death of two Jummas including UPDF’s central committee member Rui Khoi Marma who was shot death on 2 October 2009.

However, the Santu group last year took charge of the BP leadership.
