THE army on Monday detained briefly four Jumma students who were protesting at the rape of a Jumma teenage girl on 7 October in Matiranga.

The protestors were released later in the day when the students threatened with more protests.

According to sources, at 12 noon on Monday, students of Manikchari Giri Moitri college began a protest march from College Gate.

When it proceeded towards the centre of the Upazila headquarters, the police stopped them at Amtola.

Then the marchers turned around and began returning to the college in a procession.

As they reached in front of the local office of the Roads and Highways Department, a group of army personnel from Manikchari sub-zone stood in their way and arrested Shanta Marma, Imon Marma, Ula Pru Marma and Kyajai Marma.

They were handed over the police but were released in the evening when the Uapazila chairman, the college principal and others intervened.
