Army Releases Detained UPDF Member in Nanyachar on Condition

A member of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) has been released from military custody on conditions that he will not engage in UPDF activities, and help the army arrest his fellow party workers.

On the afternoon of August 5, the army detained UPDF member Ronel Chakma from the 18 Mile area of Naniachar Upazila in Rangamati district and took him to the Naniachar Zone. The following day (August 6) in the afternoon, he was reportedly released through local public representatives on the conditions that he "will not work for UPDF and must help the army to arrest UPDF members."

It is known that on August 5, 2025, a team of army personnel detained UPDF member Ronel Chakma from the 18 Mile (Thanda Bazar) area on the Rangamati-Khagrachari road and took him to the Rangamati Sadar Brigade.

The next morning, he was brought back to the Naniachar Sadar Zone. Then, on the afternoon of the same day, public representatives were called to the zone, and Ronel Chakma was released with the conditions that he "will not work for UPDF and must help the army to detain UPDF members." It is also reported that he was threatened with death by shooting if he violates the conditions and works for UPDF."

Among the public representatives present were Rupak Chakma, member of Ward No. 8, and Diganta Chakma, member of Ward No. 9, of Naniachar Sadar Union.
