Intensified army patrols, carried out under the pretext of a training program, have sparked fear and anxiety among the local population in the Maischari and Dhumonighat areas of Mahalchari Upazila in Khagrachari district.

A special public notice issued by the Mohalchari Zone of the army stated: "From August 11 to August 16, 2025, as part of the army’s regular training activities, blank firing and other exercises will be conducted in the Maischari and Dhumonighat areas of Mahalchari upazila." The notice also requested the general public not to be alarmed during this time.

However, questions have arisen regarding how appropriate it is to conduct blank firing in densely populated areas. Moreover, while the notice mentions Maischari and Dhumonighat, it does not specify the exact locations where blank firing will take place. As a result, local residents are afraid to go about their daily activities, such as working in the jhum (shifting cultivation) fields.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that on Friday morning (August 15), a group of 60–70 army personnel from the Mahalchari Zone, carrying bags and training equipment, went to the Thandachari area of Sindukchari Union.

According to reports, army patrols have been intensified in the Maischari and Dhumonighat areas since August 11 as part of the training activities. Despite the public notice asking people not to panic, local residents claim they have little information about the activities, leading to widespread fear.
