Reports have emerged of a large military deployment in
Bormachari, under Lakshmichari Upazila of Khagrachhari district, raising fears
among local residents of an imminent large-scale military operation.
Sources say that in the early hours of today, Tuesday
(August 19, 2025), at around 3 AM, approximately 100 army personnel led by Lt.
Colonel Md. Tajul Islam, Commander of the Lakshmichari Zone, arrived at the
Shuknachari Camp (Sub-zone) in Bormachari Union. It is reported that they plan
to conduct operations in various areas of the region.
Earlier, on Monday (August 18), the army carried out a
search operation in Hudukchari, another area within the same union.
Meanwhile, an emergency law and order meeting was
called yesterday (August 18) at the Khiram Camp under the Lakshmichari Army
Zone. Representatives and traditional village leaders (karbaris) from three
unions—Fatikchhari, Bormachari, and Khiram—were told that their attendance was
mandatory.
At the meeting, camp Commander Atik told the public
representatives and karbaris in stern language: “If any members of the UPDF
(United Peoples’ Democratic Front) are seen, you must report it immediately.”
He also questioned the elders about whether extortion
was taking place in the area.
At one point in the discussion, Mr. Atik stated, “The
road from Khiram to Bormachari, and Bormachari to Lakshmichari, will be built
at any cost.”
A few days ago, the commander of the Shuknachari camp,
a certain Captain, sternly told some local elders who were visiting the camp:
“It’s going to get heated here. Even if someone is a regular civilian, he not
will be spared.”
Hearing such sudden and strong statements from the
Captain, the attending elders were visibly alarmed and distressed. They now
fear that a large-scale military operation, including house-to-house searches
and arrests, could begin at any time.
Local residents are currently living in fear and
uncertainty.
