A report was published this morning (18 August 2025) by CHT News regarding an army operation and house searches in Hudukchari, under the Barmachari Union of Lakshmichhari upazila in Khagrachhari district. The initial report mentioned that the homes of three villagers had been searched. However, according to the latest information, searches were actually conducted in the homes of five individuals.

According to local sources, at approximately 2:00 a.m. today, more than 70 army personnel from the Bannyachola Army Camp under Lakshmichhari Zone arrived in Hudukchari. Around 5:00 a.m., they surrounded the homes of five innocent villagers in the Hudukchhari Bazar Para area and conducted house searches for nearly two hours. It has been alleged that during the operation, the soldiers also looted household items and documents.

The individuals whose homes were searched are: Babu Santal (age 30), son of Yugol Roy Santal, Nayanta Chakma (age 34), son of Binduk Chakma, Pritimoy Chakma (age 28), son of Suresh Kumar Chakma, Rubel Chakma (age 32), son of Kalachan Chakma, and Jonto Chakma (age 35), son of Ananda Chakma (wife’s name: Jeki Chakma)

The army surrounded Babu Santal’s home at 5:25 a.m. First, they encircled the house, then entered and conducted a search. Finding nothing incriminating inside, they allegedly threatened the family, saying, “If you can’t hand over UPDF members, we’ll put all of you in jail. Remember this.”

At 5:00 a.m., the army also surrounded and entered Nayanta Chakma’s house. During the search, they ransacked important household items. Allegedly, they also looted land documents and other valuables.

Pritimoy Chakma's house, which was also searched by the army.

At the same time, soldiers surrounded and searched Pritimoy Chakma’s house. They threatened the residents, saying, “Where do the UPDF people stay? You must hand them over, or things will go badly for you.” Later, Pritimoy Chakma and about 15–16 night guards from a tea garden were detained for two hours and harassed before being released.

The army also searched the homes of Rubel Chakma and Jonto Chakma. While searching Rubel Chakma’s house, soldiers allegedly pointed guns and ransacked the entire home. They reportedly threatened Rubel, saying, “Where are the weapons? Give them to us. If you can’t, we’ll kill you in an encounter. If you don’t have weapons, hand over UPDF members.”

Additionally, it has been reported that a local youth named Arun Chakma was detained and harassed for about an hour.

The army’s operation has reportedly created widespread fear among local residents. After the searches and alleged harassment, the army deployed drones to patrol various parts of the area, further disrupting villagers’ daily lives and work.

According to locals, the army returned to their camp around 10:30 a.m. after the searches. It is also reported that several local informants accompanied the soldiers during the operation.

Meanwhile, the Lakshmichari Zone Commander is expected to visit the Shuknachhari Camp (sub-zone) in Barmachari today. For this reason, it has been reported that the army will conduct patrol operations in Muktachari, North and South Shuknachari, Kandab Para, Tanuram Para, Futtachari, Jatindra Karbari Para, Gobmara, Baghya Para, and Pekkoya Para areas.
