Six villagers, including a woman, were subjected to abuse and harassment by army personnel in Jagat Mohan Para (Jaga Para) of Chenghi Union in Panchari Upazila, Khagrachari district.
According to sources, today, Saturday (20 September
2025), around 4 AM, a group of army personnel from the Panchari sub-zone raided
Jaga Para and fired blank shots, creating panic in the area.
Shortly after, the army detained three
individuals—including two minors—and subjected them to physical abuse while
keeping them tied up.
The detainees were:
• Suprabhat Chakma (26), son of Lalendra Chakma
• Nishanta Chakma (17), son of Bijoy Ratan Chakma
(also known as Manek)
• Ripen Chakma (14), son of Nuaram Chakma
Later, when the village chief (Karbari), Bishwamoni Chakma (64), son of the late Surendra Lal Chakma, and Ward No. 6 member Rupak Chakma, along with some local women, went to the scene to negotiate their release, the army allegedly harassed them as well.
Karbari Bishwamoni Chakma was reportedly tied up and
slapped several times, while Rupak Chakma, the UP Member, was also subjected to
various forms of harassment.
In addition, a woman named Tungpoti Chakma (also known
as Kinabala), aged 40, the wife of Bijoy Ratan Chakma (Manek), was also
reportedly abused by the army.
At the time, the army allegedly ordered Tungpoti
Chakma to demolish their home and relocate elsewhere.
Eventually, all the detained individuals were
released, and the army personnel returned to the Panchari sub-zone.
Eyewitnesses reported that known collaborators or
armed vigilantes—Alo Chakma, Romel Chakma (Kalakchu), and Niti Dutta
Chakma—were seen accompanying the army.
Meanwhile, in response to the blank firing and arrests
in Jaga Para, the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) issued a statement
this morning condemning the actions and warning that the army may stage a drama
involving "gunfire and arms recovery."
It is worth noting that in recent times, the army has
been conducting frequent so-called operations in Jaga Para and other areas of
Chenghi Union, during which civilians are reportedly being harassed and
oppressed.
This has led to growing anger and dissatisfaction
among the local population, who are reportedly preparing to resist such abuses
by the army at any time.
