Rajan Chakma, who was detained during an army
operation on 24 December 2025 in Kalabunia village of Ward No. 8 under No. 2
Fatikchari Union of Kaukhali Upazila in Rangamati, has been released, reports
say.
He was released at around 8:00 a.m. on Friday (26
December) from Ultachari under Bormachari Union of Lakshmichari Upazila in
Khagrachari.
News of his detention had previously been published by
CHT News.
The victim, Rajan Chakma, is a resident of Kalabunia
village. His father’s name is Shanti Kumar Chakma. He is currently living in
the Bormachari market area after building a house there. However, due to work
requirements, he often stays with his family at his in-laws’ house in
Khagrachari Sadar. His parents live in Bormachari.
On the day of the incident, he went from his house in
Bormachari to his old home in Kalabunia to check on his cultivated gardens,
where he was detained by the army. After receiving news of his detention, his
mother, Milna Devi Chakma, went to the army personnel stationed in Kalabunia on
the morning of 25 December. However, the soldiers denied having detained him
and advised her to inquire at the police station. When no information was found
at the police station either, the family became extremely worried.
According to the victim, on that day (24 December),
when he arrived at his old house in Kalabunia from Bormachari, he saw a group
of army personnel there. The soldiers detained him and kept him in custody.
That night, he was made to wear army clothing and was kept at Kalabunia School.
The next day (25 December) in the evening, he was handed over to a team of
soldiers stationed at Ultachari in Bormachari, after which he was taken there.
It is noteworthy that earlier, a 70-member army team from the Lakshmichari Army
Zone had taken position at the site of a Buddhist monastery under construction
in Ultachari village.
He was kept in army custody at Ultachari on the night
of 25 December and was released at around 8:00 a.m. the following day (26
December). He stated that he was not physically tortured or mistreated.
Information has been received that the detention of an
innocent person caused some misunderstanding between two army groups
(Lakshmichari and Ghagra), as one member of the Lakshmichari army team knew
Rajan Chakma personally.
It may be mentioned that on Tuesday (23 December), an
80-member army team from the Ghagra Champatali Army Camp in Rangamati went to
Nabhanga village. After staying there overnight, the soldiers moved to
Kalabunia village at around 4:00 a.m. the next day (24 December) and took
position there.
In addition to detaining Rajan Chakma, it has been
alleged that on that day the soldiers broke into the house of Bidarsha Chakma
(28), son of Meru Chakma, and took away raw vegetables, rice, and cooking
utensils stored there.
Villagers also reported seeing four masked members
(vigilantes) accompanying the soldiers.
Later, on the morning of 26 December, the soldiers
reportedly returned to their camp.
Meanwhile, on 25 December, a 70-member army team from
the Lakshmichari Army Zone went to Ultachari village under Bormachari Union and
took position at the site of a Buddhist monastery under construction. As of
yesterday (26 December), the team was still stationed there.
Additionally, it has been reported that a 40-member
army team has been stationed for several days in the lychee orchard of Shanti
Kumar Chakma, located beside Bormachari bazaar.
