A settler Bengali man named Abdul Gafur Sheikh (65)
has been accused of attempting to rape an indigenous girl studying in Class 9,
in Bilaichchhari, Rangamati.
The incident reportedly took place on Saturday
afternoon, May 23, 2026, in the Kyarangchhara area of No. 2 Kengrachhara Union
under Bilaichchhari Upazila.
Locals have identified the accused Abdul Gafur Sheikh
as a resident of Gachkata Chhara village in Bilaichchhari.
According to local sources and social media accounts,
at around 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 23, the victim student was walking home
after finishing private tutoring. Upon spotting her alone on the road, Abdul
Gafur Sheikh began calling out to her while making obscene and inappropriate
gestures. Sensing the man's intentions and realizing she was in danger, the
girl attempted to flee quickly from the scene. The accused then chased her from
behind in an attempt to apprehend her. However, without panicking, the girl
courageously ran and successfully escaped his grasp, reaching safety.
When the incident became known, it sparked anger among
local residents.
However, following the incident, there are allegations
that the accused Abdul Gafur Sheikh was released without any punishment, with
only a written undertaking obtained, through the intervention of a local
elected representative.
