Bangladesh Army personnel opened fire on leaders and members of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) on Friday morning, June 26, 2026, in the Painong Para area of Hafchhari Union, Guimara Upazila, Khagrachhari District, according to local sources. UPDF organizer Jhimit Chakma was reportedly shot and wounded during the incident and was subsequently taken into custody by army personnel.

The shooting occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m., when an army unit that had allegedly been lying in wait launched a surprise attack on the UPDF group. Chakma, identified as an organizer of the UPDF's Guimara Unit, reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to his hand and thigh. His current condition was not immediately known.

Army personnel later left the area with Chakma in custody, residents said, heading toward Guimara Sadar.

Local sources also alleged that masked armed individuals were present alongside the soldiers during the operation.

The incident has reportedly generated widespread fear among local residents.

The UPDF strongly condemned the operation and called for protests against it.
