Members of the Bangladesh Army have been accused of
harassing two brothers after surrounding their homes in Kojaichhari Village
under Ghagra Union in Kaukhali Upazila, Rangamati District.
The incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday morning,
July 22.
The two brothers, Ananda Chakma and Ujjal Chakma, are
the sons of Jagat Hari Chakma, a resident of Kojaichhari Village.
According to local sources, a team of soldiers
stationed at Harangi High School since Tuesday entered Kojaichhari Village at
around 9:00 a.m. and surrounded the brothers' homes. During the operation,
soldiers allegedly pounded on the front door of Ananda Chakma's house before
bringing his two sons, Shailen Chakma and Afuranta Chakma, into the courtyard
for questioning.
The two men were reportedly interrogated on suspicion
of having links to the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF).
During the questioning, Ananda's wife, Tosi Chakma,
told the soldiers, "Sir, these are my two sons. They are not UPDF
members."
The soldiers then contacted Ananda Chakma by phone and
instructed him to return home to verify their identities.
Ananda, who works as a Mahindra transport driver, was
away carrying passengers because it was the weekly market day in Ghagra Bazaar.
After he arrived and confirmed that the two men were his sons, the soldiers
allowed them to leave.
Local residents said the soldiers continued
questioning the family, asking when UPDF members visit the village, how many
usually come, and whether residents are required to pay extortion money.
The same team later went to the nearby home of
Ananda's younger brother, Ujjal Chakma, where they reportedly asked similar
questions. No search was conducted inside the house.
Ujjal Chakma, who also works as a Mahindra transport
driver, was not at home at the time. In addition to their transport business,
the two brothers support their families through farming and are regarded by
local residents as well-known and respected members of the community.
After visiting both homes, the soldiers returned to
their position at Harangi High School.
The incident has reportedly fueled anger among
residents of Kojaichhari Village, who described the operation as an act of
intimidation against two civilians.
As of 11:00 a.m., local residents reported that a
group of approximately 20 soldiers was moving toward the Kojaichhari Mon area.
