Six Indigenous residents, including two women, were
injured in an alleged assault while traveling to Ramgarh Bazaar in
Khagrachhari's Ramgarh Upazila on Wednesday morning, July 22. The victims also
accused the attackers of looting cash, mobile phones, and agricultural produce.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 7:00 a.m.
in the Sonai Aga area of the upazila.
The injured were identified as Sneha Kumar Chakma, 40;
Robi Shanti Chakma, 38; Lakshmi Kumar Chakma, 45; Bindu Chakma, 41; Sonadebi
Chakma, 37; and Gurimila Chakma, 39.
According to the victims, they had set out from Nangel
Para in a three wheeled auto rickshaw driven by Md. Didar, carrying
agricultural produce to sell at Ramgarh Bazaar. They alleged that their vehicle
was stopped in the Sonai Aga area by a group of seven men led by local resident
Md. Yunus, also known as Abul Kalam, and Md. Yusuf, a settler Bengali who has
previously faced allegations of collecting illegal tolls.
The victims said the group assaulted them before taking a Symphony feature phone, two Robi SIM cards, and one Grameenphone SIM card from Sneha Kumar Chakma. They further alleged that the attackers seized Tk 4,000 in borrowed cash from another victim.
The group also reportedly took 32 bunches of bananas
and about two maunds of fresh vegetables that the victims had been transporting
to the market for sale.
Sneha Kumar Chakma sustained serious injuries in the
attack, according to his family. They said he was unable to seek hospital
treatment because of financial hardship and is currently recovering at home.
