An attempt by Muslim settlers to forcefully occupy
land belonging to local indigenous communities has been reported in the South
Pablakhali area of Baghaichhari upazila, Rangamati. While the settlers were
reportedly forced to flee following resistance from local residents, the
incident has triggered widespread tension in the area.
According to local sources, a group of ten settlers,
led by an alleged Muslim land grabber identified as Kuddus, arrived on Monday
morning, July 27, 2026, in an attempt to seize the indigenous community's land.
When local residents stood their ground to defend the property, the settlers
were forced to retreat.
However, the confrontation turned violent, leaving an
indigenous resident identified as Mahendra Chakma (55) injured. Locals reported
that the settlers attacked him, causing a back injury by throwing a domestic
machete (da) at him.
Despite the settlers' retreat, residents remain
deeply anxious, fearing that the group might reorganize and mount another
attempt to capture the land.
Meanwhile, personnel from the Border Guard Bangladesh
(BGB) and the army have reportedly deployed to the scene to maintain order and
bring the situation under control.
Further details regarding the incident are still
emerging as the situation develops.
