A female indigenous student from Chittagong University
was reportedly subjected to an attempted molestation and later physically
assaulted on a local bus traveling along the Chittagong-Khagrachhari highway on
Friday afternoon, July 24, 2026.
The victim is a freshman sociology student from the
2024–25 academic session.
According to reports, the incident began around 4:15
PM when the student boarded a Khagrachhari-bound bus operated by
"Khagrachhari Paribahan" at Chittagong University's Gate 1. Shortly
into the journey, a middle-aged Bengali man sitting near the front of the bus
allegedly used the excuse of smoking a cigarette to change seats, moving
directly behind the student. He then began making inappropriate advances and
attempted to molest her.
When the student fiercely protested, the bus crew
intervened and forced the suspect off the vehicle in the Hathazari area.
However, the ordeal did not end there. The suspect
reportedly hailed a CNG-powered autorickshaw to bypass traffic, intercepted the
bus further down the road in Fatikchhari, and boarded it again. He then grabbed
the student by her hair and violently tried to drag her off the bus.
Other passengers quickly stepped in to restrain the
attacker. Eyewitnesses noted that the situation could have escalated severely
had the passengers not intervened immediately.
Local residents and passengers detained the suspect on
the spot and handed him over to the Fatikchhari Police Station. The victim has
filed a formal written complaint, and law enforcement officials have assured
her that strict legal action will be taken.
