Bangladesh Army units deployed to several locations across Kawkhali Upazila on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, occupying two school compounds and conducting patrols that residents say have heightened tension in the area.
According to local sources, about 30 army personnel from Ghagra Champatali Army Camp took positions at the student hostel of Chelachara Government Primary School at approximately 9 a.m. At the same time, roughly 20 personnel were stationed at Harangi High School in Levapara village, while another 20 from Talukdar Para Army Camp occupied Ultapara Government Primary School.
Indigenous residents said additional troops arrived shortly afterward in two vehicles from the Ghagra Champatali and Kawkhali army camps. The soldiers were carrying cooking equipment, tents and other supplies, leading residents to believe they planned to stay overnight, sources said.
Separately, around 10 a.m., about 20 to 22 personnel from Kawkhali Army Camp moved to the Majher Para Market area in Ward No. 6 of Kalampati Union. The group later split in two: 11 personnel advanced through Kolapara to Debapara, patrolling the surrounding hills, while the rest remained at Majher Para.
During the patrol, soldiers questioned indigenous residents about the activities of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), local sources said.
As of this writing, army personnel remained deployed at Debapara Hill and Majher Para.
Residents said the increased military presence,
including the occupation of school facilities, has created fear and unease in
the community. They allege that frequent patrols disrupt daily life due to
concerns about harassment, and that the use of educational institutions as
military positions is affecting local Indigenous students' education.
