Democratic Youth Forum (DYF) President Jiko Tripura
has strongly condemned the arrest of former DYF member Sabiran Chakma, 37,
while he was receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital,
despite there being no criminal case against him. He called for Chakma’s
immediate release and access to proper medical care.
In a statement issued to the media on Wednesday,
October 28, 2026, Tripura said personnel from the Directorate General of Forces
Intelligence (DGFI) and police arrested Chakma from Bed No. 49 in Ward No. 79
of Chittagong Medical College Hospital at around 2 p.m. on Monday, October 26.
Chakma is currently being held in the hospital’s
prison ward and is allegedly being denied medical treatment, the statement
said. He was admitted to the hospital on October 22 with gunshot wounds.
According to Tripura, Chakma, a resident of Latiban in Panchhari subdistrict of Khagrachhari District, was shot by unidentified assailants while he was working.
Tripura alleged that a particular group was conspiring
to implicate Chakma in an old case, despite his not being involved in any
criminal activity.
“Panchhari police investigated the matter on October
24 and found that no criminal case existed against Sabiran Chakma. However, we
have learned that a conspiracy is underway to file a case against him,” Tripura
said.
He said that filing a case against Chakma despite the
absence of any previous criminal case or involvement in criminal activity would
be grossly unjust and inhumane and would violate the fundamental rights
guaranteed by the country’s laws and Constitution.
Tripura urged the relevant government authorities to
refrain from such actions, release Chakma immediately, and ensure that he
receives appropriate medical treatment.
