A joint team of Bangladesh Army personnel and police
allegedly surrounded and searched the home of Ananda Mohan Chakma, a resident
of Dipu Para in Machalong, Sajek Union, Baghaichari, Rangamati, and attempted
to detain his daughter, Jharna Chakma, an SSC candidate.
According to local sources, at around 5:00 a.m. on
Saturday, October 24, 2026, a joint Army-police team from the Machalong Army
Camp and police station surrounded and searched Ananda Mohan Chakma’s home in
Dipu Para. During the operation, the team allegedly attempted to detain Jharna
Chakma. At one point, a scuffle broke out between her mother and police
officers, allowing Jharna to get away.
When contacted for comment, Sajek Police Station
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain said the Machalong Army Camp
had asked him to send a police team. According to him, the Army had informed
him that activists from the Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee and the
Sajek Karbari Association were picketing at Uj Bazar in Gangaram and that
police personnel needed to be sent there. He said he had not known that the
team would go to Jharna Chakma’s home after the police force was dispatched.
On October 11, Jharna Chakma spoke to journalists
during a road blockade called by the Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee
and the Sajek Karbari Association in the Uj Bazar area of Sajek. She described
alleged abuses by the Army. Following her remarks, Army personnel reportedly
began looking for her and instructed her to report to the camp. Jharna later
disclosed in a video message that the Army was searching for her.
