Santu group men arrested after botched assassination attempt in Subolong

An activist of the Santu Larma faction of the Jana Samhati Samiti has been arrested after a failed attempt to assassinate members of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) in Subolong, Rangamati.

According to sources, three members of the Santu group yesterday went to Subolong bazaar from Rangamati town to assassinate UPDF members.

When their movement looked suspicious the people informed the army of the nearby camp about them.

Initially, the soldiers were reluctant to detain and interrogate them. But after repeated requests from the local people, the army raided a house at 3am and arrested one of them.

He has been identified as Runu Chakma, 25, son of Pankha Chakma of village Digholchari, Subolong.

A firearm was recovered from his possession.

However the other two managed to flee in a motorized country boat.

Runu Chakma has admitted to plotting to kill UPDF members in Subolong.

He was handed over to the police today and a case has been initiated against him.

The incident came in the wake of several failed attempts by Santu group to capture UPDF office in Subolong.
