A JUMMA couple was shot and wounded by suspected settlers in Taindong Union of Matiranga on Wednesday night, apparently over a land dispute.

The police have arrested Md. Ripon in connection with the incident.

According to sources, Jyoti Bikash Tanchangya, 40, and his wife Reni Chakma, 35, were sleeping when the miscreants entered their house, shot at them and then ran away.

When the couple screamed, their neighbours rushed there and rescued them and sent them to Matiranga Health Complex.

After providing first aid, the attending doctor referred them to Khagrachari Sadar Hospital for further treatment.

In Khagrachari, when their condition began to deteriorate, they were shifted to Chittagong Medical College hospital on Thursday morning.

Md. Main Uddhin Khan, Officer-in-charge of Matiranga police station, confirmed the incident, adding that the attack might be related to a land dispute between them.

He said a Bengali settler named Md. Ripon was arrested in this connection and that preparations were being made to file a case against him.
