AN armed gang loyal to Santu Larma has kidnapped two activists of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) and then handed them over to the army in Ghagra under Rangamati district, UPDF has said.

About 15 – 20 JSS (Santu) men led by Subhash Chakma raided a tea shop at Junuma-chara at about 11am today and kidnapped the two at gun point. The kidnapped UPDF members have been identified as Nikhil Tripura, 23, son of Sona Ranjan Tripura of village Naniachar and Ratan Chakma, 38, son of Nuochan Chakma of village Joutha Bagan, Chelachara, Kaokhali. The miscreants used four CNG-run auto rickshaws during the raid.

They forced the UPDF men to get into the auto rickshaws and then drove away. Later, the Santu loyalists handed them over to the army in Ghagra. UPDF in a statement has condemned the kidnapping of its two activists as “cowardly” and demanded that they be released unconditionally without harm. Organiser of UPDF Ghagra unit, Ani Chakma, said:

“The incident has proved once again that the Santu Larma clique has been carrying out destructive activities including murder, kidnapping, terrorism and extortion with the help of the army.”

He urged Larma to shut politics of destruction and terrorism and take part in the struggle of the people for achieving just rights.
