AN activist of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) has been arrested from Subolong bazaar under Barkal Upazila of Rangamati district, sources have said.

According to sources, the police arrested Ripon Chakma, 29, a field level activist, at 8am today while he went to Subolong bazaar (market place) to meet the OC of Barkal police station.

Ripon Chakma hails from the village of Dhevachara under Jurachari Upazila in Rangamati district. His father’s name is Chironjeeb Chakma.

The reasons behind his arrest could not be known.

In a previous incident, on 18 December, another UPDF member was arrested from Matiranga in Khagrachari district.

His name is Samiron Chakma, 29. He, along with another UPDF activist, was holding a public meeting in the village of Khedarachara when a group of Bengali settlers attacked them.

While his friend was able to escape the attack, the settlers seized him.
