A VOCALLY challenged Jumma woman was reportedly raped by
two Bengali settlers in 195 Bama Gomati Mouza under Matiranga Upazila in
Khagrachari district, sources said.
The incident happened at 7:30pm
on Wednesday, yesterday. The villagers seized the rapists – Oli Ahmed alias
Olia (38) son of Abdul Matin and Zinat Ali (35) son of Abdul Aziz, both of them
from West Gorgoria Chowddha Gram in Gomati.
Quoting victim’s family a villager told chtnews.com that the settler
youths had gone to the house of Kiron Tripura, assistant teacher of Apurna
Mahajon Para Registered Primary School, in the village of Kiron Master Para
and, finding her alone, raped her.
The victim, 35-year-old Kiron Mala Tripura is from the same
village and was looking after the house while Kiron Tripura and his family were
away to attend his father-in-law’s funeral in another village.
Her father Tirtho Kumar Tripura is a poor jum
cultivator.
No case has yet been filed with the police, and it’s learnt
that the settlers are trying hard to settle the issue through mediation.
Village elders from both sides are supposed to meet in an
arbitration meeting today, the sources further said.
‘The Jummas in that area are afraid even to file cases with
the police when such incidents occur.’ a local UPDF activist commented.
‘And there are reasons for that; they are poor, illiterate
and marginalized in every sense of the term.’ he added.
