THREE Jummas were wounded in an attack by illegal Bengali
settlers in the village of Amtola
under Aimachara Union No. 3 in Barkal Upazila of Rangamati district, sources
said.
The incident took place on 31 May, Thursday when Biro Kumar
Chakma, 60, his son Amar Kanti Chakma, 28, and daughter-in-law Sangeetmala
Chakma, 25, were constructing houses on their own land.
Amir Hossain, 45 and his two sons, Md. Jashim, 21, and Md. Ibrahim,
18, carried out the attack. They beat the Jummas with sticks, injuring all the
three.
While Biro Kumar Chakma was admitted to hospital with
serious injuries, Amar Kanti and Sangeeta were given first aid.
Biro Kumar Chakma filed a complaint with the police in
connection with the attack.
An eyewitness, Shakib, said Amir Hossain and his two sons
beat Biro Kumar Chakma and his son and daughter-in-law with sticks and fists.
Biro Kumar Chakma said, ‘Amir Hossain is a land grabber; he
has already grabbed my paddy land, and now he is trying to take away my tiny
hilly land.’
He continued: ‘Amir Hossain came in 2006, grabbed my paddy
land by force and then built a house on it.’
He said he had registered a general diary against Amir
Hossain at the time.
According to villagers, there are lots of allegations
against Amir Hossain of land grabbing and involvement in attacks.
ASI of Barkal police station, Md. Selim Reza, said, ‘Biro
Kumar Chakma has lodged a complaint with the Thana.
The police will investigate on the basis of the complaint. We will take legal
actions if the incident is proved to be true during the investigation.’
