Attempted rape on Jumma female student by army alleged

AN ARMY soldier has attempted to rape a female Jumma college student in Kaptai, alleged Bangladesh Marma Students’ Council (BMSC) at a press conference in Rangamati town yesterday, reports Prothom Alo.


Uthan Marma, the Vice President of BMSC, in a written statement said, ‘Three Jumma female students stay in a rented house at Boroichari Karnaphuli College Gate area in Kaptai Upazila headquarters.

‘On Saturday night, at about 1:30am, one Mohammed Abu Yusuf, a member of the Bangladesh Military who came home on leave, broke into the girls’ house and tried to rape one of them.’

He also tried to take her away by force, the BMSC leader said, adding ‘When the girl shouted, her classmates and several nearby people rushed there and Abu Yusuf made off.’

He further said that the victim had filed a case with Kaptai police station on Sunday night against Abu Yusuf under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

The press conference was also attended by Uniching Marma, president of BMSC Rangamati unit, Sathoai Aung Marma, general secretary, and Ushuiching Marma, president of BMSC Kaptai Upazila unit.

The Officer-in-charge of Kaptai police station, Md. Belaiyet Hossain, has confirmed the sexual assault on the girl.

He said, ‘Abu Yusuf has been arrested and handed over the security force for punishment under its own laws.’
