A COLLEGE student and supporter of the United Peoples’
Democratic Front (UPDF) has been kidnapped by Santu Larma loyalists from
Kallyanpur in Rangamati town, sources have said.
His
friends have urged all, including national and human rights organizations, to
put pressure on Santu Larma to release him.
Kumentu
Chakma, a second year student of Rangamati
Government College,
was kidnapped last night, at 11pm,
from Gattopara of Kallyanpur in Rangamati town.
The
Santu group men abducted him allegedly for voicing support for the UPDF. His
elder brother was a member of the UPDF and was killed by a Santu Larma backed
armed gang.
Kumentu,
son of Dhana Mohan Chakma, is originally from the village
of Dhamechara (also called
Panchari) in Jurachari Upazila of Rangamati district. He and friends live in a
rented house in Kalyanpur.
The
United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) in a statement has condemned the
kidnapping and urged the Santu group to release him unharmed.
Sachal
Chakma, organizer of UPDF Rangamati district unit, said, ‘The government is
using Santu Larma to destroy the existence of the Jumma people. What was done
previously by the army is now being done by the hired goons of Santu Larma.’
‘But
the CHT people will defeat the government conspiracy and dump Santu Larma, the
national traitor and the vilest dalal (collaborator), into the dustbin
of history.’ he added.
Kumentu
Chakma’s friends have requested – through chtnews.com – national and international human rights
organizations, indigenous people’s organizations, individuals and those
sympathetic to the cause of the Jumma people to urge Santu Larma to release
Kumentu Chakma.
