THE military-backed Borkha Party terrorists shot and wounded a villager in Matiranga under Khagrachari district.

The shooting took place at about 8:30pm yesterday, 30 September, in the village of Richai Chowdhury Para in Bat-toli area.

The victim, Kongjaw Pru Chowdhury, 35, son of late Kongyo Chowdhury, was having dinner at his home when four Borkha Party men led by Chaila Pru Marma went there and requested for drinking water.

When Kongjaw Pru Chowdhury went out to serve them water, the terrorists shot at him multiple times, leaving him seriously wounded. He sustained injuries to his hand, neck and waist.

Taking him for dead, the Borkha terrorists fled the scene in the direction of Budung Para.

A little later the army appeared and recovered Kongjaw Pru Chowdhury, who was then rushed to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

According to villagers, the incident might be a sequel to a longstanding feud between Kongjaw Pru Chowdhury and Chaila Pru Marma, which reached a feverish pitch during the last Union Council elections over who would stand for the post of member.

Chaila wanted to have his brother stand for the election which was opposed and challenged by Kongjaw. Eventually both Kongjaw and Chaila’s brother lost, and Chaila joined the Borkha Party to avenge the defeat.

Many in the village view the shooting and attempted murder is an act of retribution by Chaila.
