A JUMMA woman was
reportedly subjected to an attempted rape by a Bengali settler in Ramgarh.
The incident occurred
on 7 May, but transpired on Sunday, 10 May.
The would-be rapist
has been identified as Md. Sobuj (22) son of Uzir Mian from Bolturam Para
village in Ramgarh.
A construction
labourer, Sobuj originally hails from Sylhet district in the plain land.
According to sources,
the 28-year-old victim was attacked when she went to a dug well near an
under-construction bridge in Kalapani village under Patachara Union where Sobuj
worked as a labourer.
Sobuj followed her to
the well and asked for some water.
After drinking water,
he grabbed her and tried to rape her. However, she fought back, and in the
midst of their fight another woman of the village, Kandori Chakma, appeared
there.
She saw the settler
attempting to rape the victim, and seeing Kandori, Sobuj let go of her and
silently went away.
The incident was kept
secret in fear of social stigma and no complaint was made with the police in
connection with the incident.
