A BENGALI
rickshaw-puller reportedly broke into a house to rape a 16-year-old Jumma
(Tripura) girl in Matiranga, Khagrachari.
The incident occurred
on Wednesday night, 26 August, (at 2:00am to be precise) when Md.
Gazol Hossain, 40, entered the room where the victim, a class nine student of
Matiranga vocational school, and her younger brother were sleeping.
The brother awoke
after hearing sounds of Gazol’s footsteps or something like that and saw
him, who lives in a rented house near their rented-house at Chowdhury Para in
Matiranga town.
The boy awoke his
sister and screamed, drawing a crowd of Jumma boys living nearby; but by then
Gazol had run away.
The next day the Jumma
boys caught Gazol, but the police took him under their protection.
It is not known if any
charges were brought against him, but the Jumma boys alleged that the police
were searching for them in connection with ‘catching’ Gazol.
They fear that the
police may use the incident to harass them.
