BENGALI settlers have
grabbed 20 acres of land belonging to Jumma people with the help of the army in
Mahalchari, Khagrachari district, sources have said.
According to sources,
on Sunday night Bengali settlers from Datkuppya built eight houses on a patch
of land lying between Ultachari and Korollyachari, and have been staying there
under army protection since then.
The lands, registered
with the government in 1966, belong to two villagers – Birobol Chakma and
Nikhil Kumar Chakma.
The matter has been
reported to the local Mahalchari administration but no action has been taken so
far.
According to a latest
report, the army has dismantled the houses after the Jummas lodged a strong
protest against the illegal occupation of their lands.
