The
Bangladesh Army personnel have allegedly shot and detained a man in Rangamati.
The incident
is reported to have occurred at approximately 4 a.m. today, Thursday (August
28, 2025), in the village of Hijeychari, under Kengerachari Union of Bilaichari
Upazila in Rangamati district.
The victim
has been identified as Antar Chakma (32), son of Nigira Kumar Chakma.
It is also
alleged that the soldiers physically and sexually harassed his wife.
The army has
claimed that the detained person is a member of the JSS (Santu) group and that
they recovered 'weapons' and various documents from him. However, the JSS has
stated through their media channels that the victim is a fish farmer.
It is
reported that at around 4 a.m. today, a group of army members from the
Jibantali army camp raided Antar Chakma's home. When the soldiers broke down
the door and entered the house to search, Antar Chakma reportedly resisted. At
one point, the soldiers shot him in his hands and legs. When his wife
protested, the soldiers allegedly physically and sexually harassed her. She was
then reportedly threatened when she tried to scream.
Afterward,
the army team also went to his father's house, which is adjacent to his own,
and conducted a search. They reportedly beat his younger brothers, Riton Chakma
(18) and Ratan Chakma, along with another person.
The soldiers
then took the injured Antar Chakma and first brought him to the Hazachara army
camp. He was then reportedly taken to the Gachkatachara army camp for medical
treatment before being handed over to the police.
According to
media reports citing army sources, a case is in the process of being filed
against him for "obstructing the army's work and attempting to attack a
soldier with a sharp weapon."
Earlier, on
August 26, during an army operation, there were allegations that 17 villagers
were detained and tortured in Jurachari Upazila of Rangamati.
It is worth
noting that the army has been conducting operations in various parts of the
Chittagong Hill Tracts recently, and as a result, ordinary people are
reportedly being subjected to various forms of oppression and harassment.
